Books hosted at durendal.org

There are a number of books hosted on this site. They are all page scans of books that are in the public domain. All of the books have their copyrights cleared through Project Gutenberg and will eventually end up in the PG archives as text files. In the mean time the page scans are available here.

If you're interested in doing this kind of thing for PG, here is my list of books that might be in the public domain and aren't already in PG. Check the copyright date on the book you are thinking about doing. It must be 1922 or earlier. Clearing a book from 1923-1963 is very complicated. I'm usually looking for books from this list while at old book stores. All books you are thinking about doing should be checked against David's In-Progress List first.

All of the OCR/proofing work is being done at the Distributed Proofing site.

The copyright notices sprinkled throughout the book pages are for the html and arangement. To the best of my knowledge the page scans themselves aren't even copyrightable in the US. Regardless, if you want a copy of the page scans let me know and I'll tar them up for you.

Most of the page scans were created by scanning the books on an Epson ES-600C parallel port flat bed scanner. Some of the books had their bindings removed and were scanned a page at a time, and some were simply laid flat on the scanner and had facing pages scanned together. The images were processed with perl scripts to autocrop, rotate and split facing pages. Touch-up image editing was performed in Picture Publisher and the Gimp. The initial scan was done with either SANE or Picture Publisher. All of the scans are B/W at 300 dpi. 300 dpi is the mechanical scanning limit of the ES-600C.

The versions of the books linked to at Amazon aren't the versions used to generate the page scans. The page scans are from mostly beat up to the point of falling apart pre-1923 editions that I've acquired at various used book stores. The "Tom Swift in the Caves of Ice" is from the Des Moines Public Library. The "Tom Swift and his Wireless Message" is an inter-library loan from the Florida International University Library. The "Tom Swift and his Photo Telephone" is an inter-library loan from the University of Iowa Library. Special thanks to Jim Towey and Adventure Continues for missing Tom Swift pages and donating the copy of "Tom Swift and His Great Searchlight".

The first twenty-five Tom Swift books are public domain. There are thirty-eight books in the original series and two more Whitman Better Little Books added to it.

Starting here I got an HP Scanjet 4si. This is a fast network scanner from about 1995. It had a Token-Ring/Netware network controller that was removed. It's much faster than the Epson and it has an Automatic Document Feeder on it. Somewhere in here I got an HP USB scanner to replace the Epson. It's physicaly smaller with a larger glass bed and much faster. It's not as fast as the SCSI HP, but it's more portable and does color.
